The Tampa Theatre, completed in 1926, was designed by renowned theater architect John Eberson on a lavish budget of one million dollars. Like many large theater buildings of the Twenties, the Tampa included an adjoining office structure, whose entrance is visible at right. Eberson placed the offices in a multistory tower above the lobby area, with the bulky auditorium located crosswise behind it. A small retail shop was also accommodated to the left of the outer lobby. The building’s relatively restrained Spanish Baroque facade and its simple marquee belie its spectacular interior, which ranks among the most lavish examples of Moorish theater design extant. Unlike many less fortunate movie palaces, the Tampa was never closed; however, following a long decline, its owners sold the theater to the City of Tampa for one dollar. It has since been slowly restored to its original magnificence.
