Description :

Casa del Patio, another Long Beach collaboration between Riddle and Monarch Construction dating from around 1928, shows the architect fully exploiting the possibilities of the courtyard form. At the Alvarado, Riddle had devoted most of his architectural ingenuity to the interior court, leaving the street facades rather urban and severe; by contrast, the Casa del Patio is set back in a landscaped garden, and its rambling Spanish vernacular facade features an entrance turret with a mirador, a large projecting balcony, and a corner chimney. The upper-floor windows are deeply regressed to mimic the look of plastered masonry construction; false beams, wrought iron window grilles, and the turret’s double course of barrel tile--a vernacular detail meant to shed water from the walls--complete an especially romantic Spanish Revival composition.
