Description :

The Alvarado’s ground plan approximates a long U-shape, with the entrance gate spanning the open end. There is little correspondence between the upper and lower floor plans or between facing elevations; instead, architect Riddle provided a variety of towers, arcades, and balconies that suggest the appearance of random growth over time and visually soften the court’s perimeter. As a result, each of the Alvarado’s twenty-two apartments is unique. This view looking toward the front entrance shows a portion of the building fronted by a stout arcade, above which is a open gallery giving access to a number of upstairs units. The scored concrete path, a modern copy of the original, meanders through the courtyard and up a short flight of steps to a raised patio area, beneath which is hidden the building’s garage.
