Description :

On another note entirely, architect Merritt Starkweather maintained a look of austere Southwestern elegance in his design for Tuscon’s Arizona Inn, constructed in 1930. The cubical massing and complete absence of roof overhang on the facade elevation seem to anticipate the severity of Bauhaus modernism; throughout the balance of the building, however, lush landscaping, tiled roofs, and charismatic details such as the arch-topped chimney at background evoke a more conventional Spanish Revival theme. Founded by Arizona congresswoman Isabella Greenway, the hotel sprawls over fourteen acres in the heart of Tucson, and has hosted the likes of Roosevelts and Rockefellers, who ostensibly came to Arizona to “rough it”.
