The Pueblo Revival’s often minimalist vocabulary could still produce great drama in the hands of a capable architect. This house, designed by Arthur T. Brown and built in Tucson’s historic Colonia Solana neighborhood in 1939, is a case in point. Only the dark voids of the window and door openings and the bold phalanx of beam tails marching across the facade relieve its stark cubical form. Yet when combined with an arresting color scheme and a venerable Palo Verde tree as a visual foil, these simple elements nevertheless achieve great visual impact. Despite its seemingly modest size, the house and its casitas enclose nearly four thousand square feet of living space arranged around a walled interior courtyard complete with pool.
