Tucson’s Sam Hughes School, completed in 1927, was also the work of architect Roy Place. Here, however, the architect’s stark design is devoid of projections or ornament, and instead hinges on careful composition: large openings are played against small, rectangular against circular, single against multiple. Spanish Revival architects in the Southwest were especially skilled at wringing drama from a minimalist vocabulary, as many a Pueblo Revival design will testify.
