La Loma de los Vientos (Hill of the Winds) was the home of Western film star William S. Hart, whose movie career spanned from 1914 to 1925. Hart was born sometime around 1864 , and spent his boyhood traveling with his family across the Midwest among Indians, ranchers, and cowboys. He eventually became interested in stage acting, and in 1914 set out for California to become an actor in Western films. Hart’s insistence on authentic costumes and locations, which grew out of his familiarity with the real Old West, changed the Western film genre for good, and soon made “Two Gun Bill” a bona fide movie star. Hart made his final film, Tumbleweeds, in 1925. The same year, he purchased a ranch in Newhall, California, that had been the setting for a number of his movies, and commissioned Los Angeles architect Arthur Kelly to design his new home. La Loma de los Vientos, completed in 1927, was a sprawling and eclectic Spanish Colonial Revival composition combining a circular entrance tower with a rectangular belvedere and a Monterey-style projecting balcony.
