Description :

Although the elaborate coffered and stencil-painted ceiling at Union Station recalls the Spanish Revival’s glory days, the premonitory crispness of detail in the walls, floor, and openings beneath bespeaks the relentless tidal pull toward Modernism. The practice of mixing Revivalist and Modernist details in commercial architecture persisted well into the Thirties, and in the glacially-paced realm of public architecture, even longer. Older architects, many of whom had spent decades acquiring expertise in traditional detailing, were understandably reluctant to abandon Revivalism for a radical new movement whose aesthetic they frequently did not comprehend.
