Description :

An Andalusian-inspired exterior staircase hides behind stepped planters in this San Marino, California home built in 1928; beneath, a parabolic arch framed in superb handpainted tile marks the front door. Additional tile beautifully frames the paired French doors and accents the rail of the upper landing. Each of the facade’s three windows feature grilles of varying design that crisply punctuate the large expanses of blank wall around them. Exterior stairs of the pattern seen here were briefly in fashion during the 1920s; they were especially appropriate in the courtyard apartments then typical of Los Angeles, where they provided an elegant means of accessing upstairs units. However, their application to single-family homes was quickly abandoned, since they were susceptible to leaks and in any case seldom saw use.
