In its time, La Casa Nueva’s elaborate kitchen was a model of beauty and modernity. The large expanse of brightly-tiled countertop with its harlequin pattern combines with the diapering of the inlaid linoleum floor to create a visual dynamism seldom seen in kitchens of this period. The design of the cabinets is clean-lined and functional, without any pretension to style, as was typical of kitchen cabinetry until the postwar era. The deeply-recessed window with its broad sill is an agreeable result of the home’s thick adobe walls. The 1933 Magic Chef gas range, with its auxiliary stack of baking and warming ovens on the right, was among the largest available for domestic use; the ceiling soffit above it serves as an exhaust hood. This room is but one of four that comprise the complete kitchen: at background, beyond the restaurant-style double-acting door, is a butler’s pantry providing quick access to dishes and silverware for the breakfast room and dining room beyond. At the opposite end of the kitchen, a passage leads into the cold storage room.
