Heart
In modern times, the symbolism of the heart has more to do with romantic love than anything else. But in the cemetery, the heart is almost always a Christian symbol. The rise of the heart as a strong Christian symbol began with the mysticism of the late Middle Ages. The heart was given an encyclopedic vocabulary of attributes: a pierced heart means repentance; a flaming heart means religious zeal; a bleeding heart symbolizes Christ’s suffering; a heart in hand symbolizes love and piety; a heart surrounded by thorns is an emblem of Saint Catherine of Siena; an exposed heart with seven drops of blood symbolizing the Seven Virtues is an attribute of Saint Benedict of Palermo.
The Christian attitude of the heart being the seat of emotions is best summed up in 1 Samuel 16:7—“But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.”
