INRI This symbol is very straightforward. It’s the first letters of the Latin words Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, meaning “Jesus of Nazareth The King of the Jews.” According to John 19:19, after Jesus was crucified, Pilate mockingly wrote these same words on the cross in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.
