Military Cemetery
The Presidio
San Francisco, California
When most rural cemeteries were founded they were located outside the city limits, but still an easy carriage ride away. As cities grew, they soon surrounded the cemeteries effectively rendering them urban rather than rural cemeteries.
In 1901, San Franciscans banned burial within the city limits, and in 1914, Mayor “Sunny” Jim Rolph signed a bill providing for the ultimate removal of cemeteries from the city. For months, long lines of hearses transported the disintered dead south to the now booming necropolis of Colma.
But, the Presidio’s military cemetery, with its million dollar views of the Golden Gate Bridge, remained untouched and was allowed to continue as an active cemetery. Burials are still conducted at the Presidio, even though the Presidio itself is no longer an active military base. |
