Norman Chapel Interior
Spring Grove Cemetery
Cincinnati, Ohio
Spring Grove’s chapel, built during 1879-80, and dedicated in 1871, is a fine example of Norman architecture. The building was designed by Samuel Hannaford. The stained glass window depicting the Ascension was designed by T.S. Noble, who was chairman of the Cincinnati Art School and director of the Cincinnati Art Museum.
Hallmarks of the Chapel’s Norman style are the heavy proportions, recessed door arches, multiple doorway jambs and the simple treatment of column capitals. The most artistic and decorative aspect of the style is the use of elaborately carved mouldings in contrasting geometric patterns, seen here in the doorway.
The Norman style is of French origin. It technically is Romanesque but the name changed when, in the 11th century, it was brought to England during its conquest by William the Conqueror. |
