Bigelow Chapel Interior
Mount Auburn Cemetery
Cambridge, Massachusetts
The ribbed vaults of the Bigelow Chapel’s nave reach 80 feet high. The 40 foot by 60 foot floor area is designed with movable seating so the chapel can accommodate numbers of different activities.
The stained glass windows in back of the altar were manufactured by Ballantyne Allen of Scotland. The uppermost rose window, nestled into the peak of the Gothic arch is an adaptation of “Night”, a famous relief carving by internationally acclaimed sculptor Bertel Thorwaldsen.
Forward thinking Bostonians installed a crematory in the basement of the chapel in 1900 and added niches for cremated remains in the East Gallery in 1908. |
