Bigelow Chapel
Mount Auburn Cemetery
Cambridge, Massachusetts
The Bigelow Chapel looks like it came right out of a Gothic novel. The chapel was constructed in 1844 from designs submitted by Dr. Jacob Bigelow. (It had to be rebuilt in 1853 because of structural problems. A new building was erected following the same plans, but with better materials, in 1858.) The architectural style is plainly Gothic Revival, but to further define its peculiar characteristics, it has been variously described as “Dissenter’s Perpendicular Gothic”, “Protestant Gothic” and “Boston Granite Style”.
The Chapel, despite some Christian iconography, is nonsectarian, as is Mount Auburn Cemetery. As testament to the religious diversity of the Boston area community, the Chapel has been host to a number of Buddhist funeral services in recent years.
