Porter Angel
Allegheny Cemetery
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
This huge, bronze angel is a replica of a granite angel that once stood in the same place. The Porter monument was built c. 1897. The original granite angel, lingering on the stairs fell into disrepair. Cemetery records indicate that sometime after 1910, sculptor Brenda Putnam was commissioned to cast a replica of the angel in bronze
A number of Porters are in subterranean homes beneath the angel’s comforting wings. The best known resident is Henry Kirk Porter (died 1921) a builder of light locomotives and a Corporator of Allegheny Cemetery. |
