Pool Monument
Cypress Lawn Cemetery
Colma, California
This grieving angel, kneeling with head bowed, seems to have collapsed over the tomb of Jennie Roosevelt Pool, a cousin of President Theodore Roosevelt.
The design for the Pool monument was derived from an angel sculpted by American artist, William Wetmore Story. The angel Story sculpted as a memorial to his wife, resides in the Protestant Cemetery in Rome.
Apparently, Italian sculptor, Antonio Bernieri was taken with Story’s angel and made two copies. One of the copies rests near the Stanford mausoleum, on the campus of Stanford University, in Palo Alto, California. Although, there are no records authenticating the Pool angel as Bernieri’s work, scholars agree that if is not, it is an incredibly accurate reproduction of Bernieri’s and Story’s work.
