Family Tomb
Greenwood Cemetery
New Orleans, Louisiana
The concept on pre-fabricated homes was popularized during the Victorian era. Prospective homeowners could scan Sears Roebuck, Montgomery Ward and a host of other catalogues to order the home of their dreams– precut and delivered to their building site. For a few dollars more the catalogue company would also send a crew to assemble the house.
Along the same line, families who could not afford a custom made or architect designed mausoleum could buy a prefabricated one and have it delivered and assembled on site. The Milten Berger Company of New Orleans offered its cast iron tomb to less affluent folks who desired above ground burial. The tomb provided a space above the entry for the name of the occupant; in this case I. N. Marks. To make sure no one mistook the tomb for a storage shed the manufacturer clearly labeled each of their creations “Family Tomb”. |
