Zinc Tombstone
Lake View Cemetery
Seattle, Washington
If one preferred ground burial and could not afford a custom carved tombstone, a host of companies offered moulded metal monuments. The metal of choice was usually zinc which, when subjected to the weather, takes on the blue gray color of granite.
Purveyors of metal tombstones offered a variety of styles which could be individualized with different combinations of removable panels. These panels could be embossed with hour glasses, floral displays, pithy prose and bucolic scenes. And, of course, the departed’s name in a variety of type styles.
In most cases the metal tombstones wear much better than stone, especially marble, and even after a century of exposure to the elements, they continue to resemble recently carved granite. |
