Traffic Angel Woodlawn Cemetery Bronx, New York Garden cemeteries, such as Woodlawn in the Bronx, were a departure from the overcrowded and stark churchyards and graveyards that were literally overflowing with bodies and choking with noxious vapors. Designers of these new garden cemeteries sought to provide a bucolic setting that invited strollers, carriage riders and picnickers. Where the land was flat they designed winding roadways to breakup the monotony of the landscape and to encourage less speedy and more leisurely travel. Indeed, in today’s world, real estate developers designing tract homes employ the same device to break up the monotony of the barren suburban landscape. While driving through one of the garden cemeteries with their serpentine roadways it is easy to get lost. Its always nice to find a friendly angel to help you along the way.
